Artist Statement
The act of creating is my greatest joy. Whether I am writing, painting, drawing or distractedly dancing to music in my art studio, the creative process is my point of pure contentment. The beauty of a line, the poetry of colour, the depth of value or the weaving of words, can be composed to evoke an emotional response. I am expressive with a searching, active mind. Creating provides a place for my thoughts to land in a meaningful and unique way. The yearning for authentic connection unites our humanity. Making art to share stories, ideas and perspective is how I express this need. I hope to engage, provoke and inspire reflection in the viewer/reader the way music vibrates through one’s soul.
About the Artist
Susie grew up on a stunning river front farm, on the Mid North Coast, Australia. With a joyful heart, vivid imagination and music in her feet she navigated her youth with passion and high energy at home but quiet reserve at school.
From an early age Susie was drawn to artistic endeavours. Bored of colouring-in, she decided to draw the image from her book instead. It was that moment she fell in love with drawing and thus began her passion for visual creative expression. During her teens, she began writing poetry, and now had two creative platforms for expression.
Susie travelled extensively in her early twenties. She attended Principia College, studying art in the picturesque setting of the bluffs of the Mississippi River. Returning to the Australian landscape she completed a Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts from The University of Newcastle and began working as a primary school teacher.
Leaving teaching to raise her family, Susie also actively returned to her creativity. Inspired by her two daughters experiences, she launched Sooz Bluz Creations, publishing three children’s books. She also published a poetry collection, and has been exhibiting art in the Newcastle region. She recently furthered her art education, and has graduated from the Mastery Program with the Milan Art Institute.
Currently she works from her studio, predominantly creating oil paintings that weave the themes of women and nature. Moving away from her earlier highly stylised figures, Susie merges abstraction with expressive realism. Driven by the endless possibilities of the creative process, and revelling in the journey, she rhythmically moves the brush with music in her soul, creating her visual symphonies. Her work is distinctive, often whimsical and emotive. Susie describes her art as “the result of authentic expression dancing with imagination.”
